Work Groups

Dissemination, Education & Marketing: Activities

The overarching goal for the work group for the 2011-2012 grant year is to have the Regional Collaborative serve as the focal point for effective genetics education and dissemination of genetics information.

The ojectives for this grant year are:

•Continuously improve educational products and activities for providers and consumers.
•Finalize and begin disseminating the interactive website for elementary school settings: GEMSS - Genetic Education Materials for School Success!
•Improve utilization of genetic education materials.

Current Work

This year, the DEM work group with finalize the first "beta" version of the GEMSS website and begin implementing a plan for dissemination in each New England state.

Additionally, the DEM work group continues to review and make recommendations on genetic education materials for the NEGC website.

Accomplishments

In past years, the DEM workgroup has developed an on-line brochure to provide information on Newborn Screening for parents; updated and provided translated versions of an online New England Genetics Resource Directory; adapted information for clinicians, nurses, educators, social workers and varied ethnic groups, furthering the awareness and knowledge of those audiences.

The DEM workgroup has worked with Ann Dillon, Clinical Assistant Professor, University of New Hampshire, to create a flow chart to inform and prepare special educators as they face the complexities of working with children with genetic conditions in the classroom. Focus groups of educators were conducted to refine the charts. This effort will result in an applicable, tangible tool for the educators.
